Eldrazi Displacer Combo

eldrazidisplacerIf you read my last article, you know that I gave up on Demonic Pact. This leaves the question of what to play in Standard? I’ve been having a fair bit of success with Eldrazi ramp, which I’ve posted about, but with the Thought Knot Seers and Reality Smashers running around, I felt like the tried and true strategy of ramp into Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger was wearing thin. Yeah, I’ve spruced up the deck a bit, but it’s not performing any better, and I don’t feel it’s different enough to warrant another article, or play in anything with higher stakes than FNM.

I’ve got it in my head that Eldrazi Displacer is a good card, and I want to explore it a little.

Demonic Pact!

Demonic PactMy favorite line of text to see on a card is, “you lose the game.” Not only is it a powerful effect in itself, albeit one that you’ll want to avoid resolving for yourself, but it usually gets tacked onto the end of a card that is otherwise powerful, possibly even too good without it. The poster child for this in standard is of course, Demonic Pact.

RIP, Christopher Rush and Wayne England

I heard the news this morning that Christopher Rush had died, and then found out that I was late to find out about Wayne England. If you’re a fan of Black Lotus, Brainstorm, or Lightning Bolt, you’re probably a Chris Rush fan, and Wayne England has illustrated a variety of more recent cards like Cryptic Command and Oblivion Ring.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is the Best Card in Standard

UginThis week, I’m going to step back from doing a deck tech and talk about Ugin the Spirit Dragon. Check back in 2 weeks for a new deck!

There is much to be said about Ugin in terms of how cool he is in the Magic storyline, but I’m not really the Vorthos to tackle that one. Maybe Bruce will someday. Rather, I am here today to extoll the virtues of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon as a Magic card. Yes, the 8 cost Planeswalker card that is currently going for about $40 each on starcitygames.com. A price tag certainly is a strong indicator of how good a card is, but I’m going to take it a step further.

Ugin is the best card in standard, and will remain so until the Khans/Fate rotation.

DeathrenderToday I’m going to share a brew that has been bubbling since Lorwyn was in Standard. The truth is that the original idea for the deck came from one of Mark Gottlieb’s articles on the old www.magicthegathering.com website (now http://magic.wizards.com/,) which, I might add, is still a wonderful place to find information on every aspect of our fine game.

Deathrender. Take a minute to just look at it. Frankly, I think that they added the +2/+2 onto this card just because they needed a reason to increase the mana and equip costs. There’s no way this could be printed at less than the costs printed, and the list I share today illustrates exactly why. I’ve been adding bits and pieces to the deck for years, and here’s my list as it currently stands.
